OFFBALL

Offball is a team sport in which team members try to eliminate all opponents thus winning the set.
The playing court is 19 x 9 m divided in the middle by a net similar to a volleyball one.
The peculiarity of the game lies in the fact that eliminated players continue to play in the "Offensive" phase trying to eliminate the opponents.

History

In 1992, Prof.ssa Nelly Vasta, a physical education teacher, wanted to devise a team game that had something new to add to the range of sports practiced at school. She had the idea of a game with double attack both from inside and outside the court (hence the name OFF).
In 2008 Professor Raiti, supporting the his wife’s idea, suggested using a volleyball court which is present in almost all Italian school gyms, and the elimination of the idea of the wall as an opposition to the shots of opponents.
The involvement of their sons, Filippo and Franco lead in the following years to the drafting of the current rulebook.
On February 16, 2013 Offball became a Federation, thanks to affiliation to AICS, a sports promotion body recognized by CONI.
In July 2014, a note from the Italian Ministry of Education signed by the Executive Director, Dr. Giuseppe Pierro, officially opened the doors of schools to Offball. It is considered valuable initiative because it closely reflects the values and objectives of sport in schools.
From 2014 onwards, official championships have been held at youth level.
In 2015, the first Sicilian Regional Training Course for Offball took place in Catania, which was attended by 220 teachers from all over Sicily in Arcidiacono Pala.
In 2016 the School Championships began, organized by the Offball Federation and the Michele Amari High School in Giarre, with the participation of classes of 20 students from Secondary Schools.
In December 2016, during a Refresher Course for Physical education teachers of minor sports and non-habitual and didactically interesting sporting activities held in Noventa Vicentina, the game of the Offball was included and had notable success.
In 2017 the 2nd Schools Championship was organized and there was a 2nd Refresher Course for teachers in Palermo at the "Pio la Torre" institute.

The game

Offball, as mentioned above, is a sport with two different types of attack:
Net Attack and Off Attack.
The aim of the game is to ELIMINATE all players who are within the opposing half of the court through two different attack actions: NET ATTACK and OFF ATTACK. The team that first manages to eliminate all the opponents wins. There are no points. Knowing how to SERVE AND CATCH the ball, to be able to hit the opponents and then SLIDE focused shots are the main actions of the game. Following the initial draw, one of the two teams begins the first attack action. Each team in one half the court, 7 players on each side.
In school and youth tournaments teams can be made up of a higher number of players.
Another interesting point of this sport is that during net attack, the defending team must grab/catch the ball, while in the off attack the players must avoid the ball.
The game allows first time players an immediate game because it  does not need long learning times. It will be the trainer and the players themselves to adapt and specialize in the various roles with specific techniques.

Roles

The prevailing striker
The prevailing striker works in the central area of the court, and is therefore the pivot of the attack game, both in the attack at the net and subsequently in the off attack. He is a player with power and speed, with a great game vision.

The ‘right hand’ attacker
This attacker stands on the right side of the court, and uses the natural potential of the right arm, supporting the attack both at the net and off. He is a useful player even in the defensive phases.

The ‘left hand’ attacker
This attacker is on the left side of the court, and uses the natural potential of the left arm, as well as being supportive in attack phases, it is also useful in defensive phases.

Towers
Towers take care of defending against the off attack opponent. Generally among the tallest players of the team, they are at the back of the court to protect, and intercept the ball from opponents in the off area, blocking opponent action and then build new attack action.

Opponents
Opponents are skilled players who "oppose" with agile dodges the off attack game and avoid being hit by the ball. Usually they are faster players who have strong stamina and good game vision.

Defenders
Defenders are agile and excellent "divers", defending the internal court and from under net attacks of the opponents, thus stopping the ball from touching the floor. Direction of new offensive action is thus entrusted to them.
